Standard Keto (SKD)
The classic ketogenic diet. Track all three macros: 70% fat, 25% protein, 5% net carbs. Works for almost any goal and is the most well-studied variant.

Lazy Keto
Track only net carbs (under 20g/day). No fat, protein, or calorie counting. The most sustainable approach for people who find tracking burdensome.

Dirty Keto
Same macro targets as standard keto but allows processed, packaged, and fast food as long as net carbs stay low. Prioritizes convenience over food quality.

Cyclical Keto (CKD)
5-6 strict keto days followed by 1-2 high-carb refeed days timed around intense training. Designed to refill muscle glycogen without abandoning ketosis long-term.

Targeted Keto (TKD)
Small carbohydrate intake (25-50g) timed 30-60 minutes before high-intensity workouts. Stays in light ketosis while fueling performance.

Carnivore Diet
All animal products, zero plant foods. The most restrictive form of keto. Produces the deepest, most consistent ketosis. Used for autoimmune elimination and strict fat adaptation.

How to choose the right keto variant
The best keto variant is the one you will actually follow consistently. For most people, that means starting with lazy keto or standard keto and adding complexity only when needed. Lazy keto is best for beginners because one rule - stay under 20g net carbs - is dramatically easier to maintain than tracking four variables. Standard keto is better once you want to optimize for a specific goal like aggressive fat loss or muscle building.
Cyclical and targeted keto are variants for people who already understand standard keto and have a genuine need for carbohydrates to fuel high-intensity training. They are not easier versions of standard keto - they add complexity and require more discipline around carb-up timing and food choices. Carnivore is the most restrictive approach and is typically adopted by people who have tried standard keto and want deeper ketosis or suspect plant-based food sensitivities.
