What the protein-to-fat ratio tells you
On keto, carbohydrate is held low and fixed, so your diet really comes down to two moving parts: protein and fat. The protein-to-fat ratio is just a clean way to describe how those two are balanced. You can read it as grams of fat per gram of protein, a 1.4 to 1 fat-to-protein ratio for example, or as the share of calories each macro provides. Either way, it answers a practical question: of the food on your plate, how much is there to protect your muscle, and how much is there to fuel you.

Anchoring protein to lean mass, not just bodyweight

Why fat is the lever you pull

Protein, muscle, and the over-budget warning
The reason the higher protein settings exist is muscle retention. In a calorie deficit, your body is looking for tissue to break down for energy, and without enough protein and a reason to keep your muscle, some of that loss comes from lean mass. Adequate protein plus resistance training is the proven combination for losing fat while holding muscle, which is why a steep cut and a high protein level belong together. Eating too little protein on a hard diet is how people end up lighter on the scale but no leaner in the mirror.
